From the outside, plain white. Lift it, and a green and gold ichimatsu appears beneath the rim — the checkered pattern named for Ichimatsu Sanogawa, the eighteenth-century Kabuki actor who wore it on stage.
This is the principle the Uramasari series is built on: ornament placed where the eye does not immediately look, kept for the person holding the cup rather than for the room. Painted by hand at the Murakami kiln in Arita.
