Cranes Flying Above the Waves(4)
COLOUR PALETTE AND GOLD
The outline of the crane is first drawn in black paint and fired. After that, white, black and red paints are applied and fired once again. Finally, waves are drawn in gold and fired for the last time. The gold leaf percentage is 40%, a much higher ratio than the standard 30%.
呉須 GOSU
First, the artisan draws the lines with a cobalt-rich pigment called “gosu”. After drawing the meticulous patterns, the gosu pigment is distributed using a thick brush in order to create different hues.
釉薬 GLAZE
Next, the pot is immersed in a transparent glaze, causing the underneath gosu to develop into Murakami’s characteristic blue when fired at 1250°C.
