Red maple leaves fall across the rim and outer wall, set against a landscape of temple roofs — Kyoto in autumn, painted by hand in Arita.

The palette holds blue, vermilion and earth against the white of the porcelain. Every leaf is laid individually. The difficulty is the density: the scene has to read as a landscape on a surface a few centimetres across.
